Routes into Health Visiting and School Nursing
All of our health visitors and school nurses are qualified specialist community public health nurses. If you are interested in becoming a health visitor or school nurse, you can find out more about the role here. Northumbria University offers courses in midwifery and nursing, which can then be followed up with a postgraduate diploma in specialist community public health. For students looking to build their skills before starting a university course, Newcastle College offer a level 3 course in Nursing and Midwifery.

Health Visitor
Supporting families with children aged 0-5 years to identify health needs, promote health and wellbeing and reduce inequalities. All pregnant women in England are offered this free NHS service, which is part of the National Healthy Child Programme for children aged 0-19 years.

School Nurse
Working with school-aged children/young people, their families and schools to improve health and wellbeing outcomes, reduce inequalities and vulnerabilities. This is a free NHS service as part of The Healthy Child programme.

Specialist Health Visitor
Some health visitors have a particular focus. They provide parents and staff with up to date information and develop the service in these areas.

Complex and Vulnerable Specialist Nurse
The complex and vulnerable specialist nurses are a team of qualified nurses, led by a Specialist Nurse for Complex and vulnerable families. They review urgent cases, attend multi-agency meetings for families experiencing significant challenges and assist staff with Early Help Plans for timely intervention.

Staff Nurse
Qualified Nurses or Midwives working under the guidance of a Health Visitor or School Nurse. They will work as part of the skill mix team to deliver the Healthy Child Programme by delivering clinics, drop in’s, meetings and home visits.

Community Nursery Nurse
Qualified nursery nurses are skilled in carrying out developmental reviews, providing advice and support related to child development and behaviour. They will run clinics and carry out home visits independently. The nursery nurse may work independently, however a Health Visitor or School Nurse will oversee and develop the care plan for the parent, child or young person.

School Health Support Worker
These are staff who have undertaken additional training to provide Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) within schools, emotional support, drop in’s, 1-1 work with young people and attend meetings. They may work independently, however a Health Visitor or School Nurse will oversee and develop the care plan for the parent, child or young person.

Nursing Associate
These are staff who have completed a nursing foundation degree and undertaken additional training to provide Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) within schools, emotional support, drop in’s, 1-1 work with young people and attend meetings. They may work independently, however a Health Visitor or School Nurse will oversee and develop the care plan for the parent, child or young person.

Senior Health Visitor or Senior School Nurse
They help develop the service, line manage staff and provide guidance and support to their team.

Matron
A senior nurse who manages the Health Visiting and School Health Service.
