Stepney Bank Stables LTD

We offer volunteer programmes for 8-18 year olds and alternative provision for students with additional educational needs through the British Horse Society’s Changing Lives Through Horses (CLTH) programme.

About us

Stepney Bank Stables is a charity on a mission to bring joy and enhance the lasting life chances of young people through caring for and riding horses.

CLTH is an innovative and inspired provision allowing children and young people access and inclusion to another strand of education. Our extensive experience of working with students who present as disaffected, unmotivated, neurodiverse and even scared by the traditional school experience is consistently proven. 144 responses in our last round of feedback confirmed 117 felt they had made excellent progress, 24 good progress and 3 made slight progress.

How to access

We provide a flexible face to face service at our stables on Stepney Bank, Ouseburn. We offer taster visits and sessions, meeting with staff, of course, our horses! We are easily accessible by public transport or by car.

How we deliver

Delivery is tailored to individual needs. Small group sessions are offered morning or afternoon, last 3 hours and can include classroom, horse care and ridden activities. Staffing ratios is dependent on student’s individual needs. We work with all agencies involved, in addition to the young people to create a timetable that suits their learning style, additional needs and preference. The participant booklets and tracking system works well as students can set their own individual targets. At the end of each session we complete the participant booklet and discuss progress towards the 6 skills of communication, confidence, relationships, teamwork, responsibility and perseverance if appropriate.

How we report attendance

We keep a daily log of attendance. Non-attendance is reported if a student hasn’t arrived 30 minutes from the start of the session.
