Newcastle Educational Psychology Service (EPS) Blog

Hello and welcome!

If you’ve stumbled across this post, you might be wondering: “Newcastle EPS? Sounds important… but what do they actually do?” Fair question. Believe it or not it’s a long standing debate in the profession itself. So, we thought it was time to lift the curtain and start sharing a little about the work we do and why we love it.

Why a Blog?

Because we’re psychologists, we like to talk. A lot. About feelings, learning, inclusion, and occasionally about whether biscuits count as a coping strategy. But we realised that most of these conversations stay behind closed doors in schools, meetings, and training sessions.
So, this blog is our way of saying: “Come on in!” We’ll share stories, ideas, and the occasional nerdy insight into educational psychology. Think of it as a friendly chat over a cuppa (minus the awkward silence when someone mentions Ofsted).

What Do We Actually Do?

In short: we help schools support children and young people to thrive. In long: we assess and advise when learning feels like climbing Everest in flip-flops. We work with families and schools to make inclusion more than just a buzzword. We run training on everything from cognition and learning to emotional wellbeing. We support city-wide initiatives, early years practice, and specialist teams.

Basically, if it involves learning, behaviour, or wellbeing, we’re probably in the mix, hopefully (and sometimes quietly) making things better while trying not to drown in paperwork.

Why We Love It

Because every day is different. One minute we’re helping a child find their voice, the next we’re in a meeting about systemic change. It’s challenging, rewarding, and occasionally chaotic but always worth it.

What’s Next?

This is just the beginning. In future posts, we’ll dive into some of the exciting projects we’re working on like our Connections Project tackling school attendance, and our work supporting families of children with complex needs. We promise to keep it real and useful.
