SEND Travel Support

Parents and carers are responsible for getting their child to and from their nursery or school. However, this could be difficult and costly for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) especially if they have:

  • a physical disability
  • a medical condition
  • problems managing their behaviour and staying safe

Newcastle City Council has a duty to assist with transport if a child has SEN. This assistance could be:

  • a travel permit for public transport
  • a Personal Travel Budget (PTB)
  • independent travel training
  • suitable transport to and from school in a mini-bus, people carrier or taxi

Please know that children and young people may also be eligible for free school travel.

Our SEND Travel Support Team will decide the most appropriate travel support for a child or young person. This will be based on their needs.
