Who is eligible for SEND travel support?

Children and young people aged 5 to 16 are eligible for SEND travel support if they live in Newcastle and have:

  • a Special Educational need and Disability (SEND) or a medical condition
  • a placement at a mainstream or specialist school which Newcastle City Council agreed is the closest setting to meet their needs
  • a disability that means they are unable to make the journey, even when accompanied. For example:
    • a physical disability or mobility problem (including temporary conditions)
    • a social, emotional or behavioural issue

In some cases, we can also support:

  • children under 5 with SEND who go to a specialist nursery at a primary school
  • young people aged 16 and over with SEND who are in specialist further education (such as specialist college or sixth-form)

Not all children with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or who attend a special school will need SEND travel assistance. Each child’s needs and situation are different. We will look at each child and application individually.
