Getting ready to start childcare
Starting childcare is a big step for you and your child. You child will get to play with new toys, try different activities and make new friends. Over time, they will grow in confidence, develop social skills and become more independent. Using childcare can give you time to recharge as a parent knowing your child is safe and busy.
It’s normal for both children and parents to feel a mix of emotions during this change. Childcare settings in Newcastle, including nurseries, childminders and pre-schools, are experienced in helping children settle. They will reassure and support you and your child.
Getting Your Child Ready
💬 Talk about what’s happening
Explain where your child will be going in simple, positive terms. Talk about the activities they’ll enjoy, such as playing, making friends or story time.
🚪 Visit the setting
If possible, arrange visits before your child starts. This helps your child become familiar with the environment and the team.
🤝 Practice short separations
If your child isn’t used to being away from you, try leaving them with a trusted adult for short periods to build confidence.
🧸 Pack familiar items
A favourite toy, blanket or comforter can help your child feel secure in a new environment.
Getting Yourself Ready
📅 Plan ahead
Make sure you know the drop-off and pick-up times and what your child needs to bring. If you are worried about the cost of childcare items, speak to the setting—they may be able to help.
📝 Share information
Let the childcare provider know about your child’s interests, routines, allergies or any concerns. This helps them provide the best care.
❤️ Be prepared for emotions
It’s common to feel anxious or guilty. Remember that high-quality childcare can help your child develop confidence, learn new skills and make friends.
Settling In
Most childcare settings in Newcastle offer settling-in sessions. These help you build positive relationships with your child and the practitioners.
These may include:
- Short visits with your child
- Gradually increasing the time they stay
- Opportunities to meet staff and other children
It’s important to say goodbye clearly when you leave, even if your child is upset. Staff are experienced in comforting children and helping them settle quickly.
