It’s nearly time! You are getting ready to meet your baby and they can’t wait to meet you!
Have your hospital bag packed by 35 weeks.
Make sure you save important contact numbers in your phone such as the RVI Maternity Assessment Unit on 0191 2825748 and RVI Labour line on 0191 2826363
To help save space on the maternity ward, it can be best to avoid using a large suitcase.
Put items in smaller bags. This makes them easy to find. Each bag should have everything you need for a nappy/outfit change. For example, 1 bag can hold a clean vest, baby grow, a nappy, and cotton wool.
If labour needs to be induced (started), just take what you need for you and your partner and 1 outfit for your baby. Leave the rest in the car until after birth or ask a friend or family member to bring it later.
What to pack for you
o A change of clothes – something loose and comfortable to wear.
o Phone and a charger.
o Toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant (best to have a roll on deodorant as aerosols can set off the fire alarms on the ward).
o Camera.
o Snacks and drinks.
o Swimwear if you and your partner have chosen to use the birthing pool and you would like to go in too.
o Spare change for the carpark and vending machines. (Carparks may use parking apps or take card payments only. Check in advance).
o Any medication you are taking.
o Spare glasses or contact lenses if you wear them.
o Books, magazines, podcasts and music playlists
What your baby might need
o 4 vests and 4 sleepsuits.
o An outfit for going home in – this can just be a vest and baby grow.
o A hat, scratch mittens, socks or booties.
o A snowsuit if the weather is cold.
o Nappies.
o Cotton wool or wipes.
o Muslin Squares.
o Car seat for the trip home, if needed.
o A blanket or a shawl.
o If you are formula feeding you will need some bottles and formula milk. The ward can provide sterilisers.
There is a checklist for your partner on Badgernet (handheld electronic maternity notes), you can ask your midwife or have a look on the maternity unit Facebook.
