Support for carers

Do you care for someone who cannot manage without your help? Do they have an additional need, disability, illness, mental health problem or addiction?

If you are not employed to do this, then you are a carer.

Carers can be any age. This includes young carers. As a carer you may be helping someone with:

  • emotional support
  • personal care, such as, washing, dressing, going to the toilet
  • cooking, cleaning, shopping and prescriptions
  • managing money or benefits
  • appointments or dealing with services
  • acting as an interpreter

What help can I get as a carer?

You can talk to Adult Social CarePoint about your caring role. They can give you a carers assessment and help find suitable support and services.

There is also financial support available for carers. This includes:

  • carers allowance
  • benefits advice
  • carers wellbeing fund
  • personal budgets/direct payments
  • carers break personal budgets

You can also take a look at help with money for support and advice.

Our social care page has all the information about support for people with disabilities and their families.

You may also be interested in short breaks if you care for a child or young person. This can help you have a break from your caring duties.

Below is a list of organisations that can give you more information and advice.
