Types of further education courses

There are a few different types of courses in further education. Some offer more support or hands-on experience. You can see details about each one towards the bottom of this page.

For most courses, young people will get to choose the subject they want to study. There are many to choose from, including:

  • mathematics
  • construction
  • accounting
  • education and early years
  • and many more!

Supported internships (for those with an EHCP)

Details:

  • For 16 to 24 year olds with SEND and an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
  • Most of the learning takes place at a workplace
  • Useful for getting knowledge, skills, and experience for a specific job

How long does it last?

6 to 12 months

Foundation learning (for those who need extra support)

Details:

  • For people who need extra support including people with SEND
  • Often focuses on core subjects like English, Maths, and ICT
  • Teaching and learning can be adapted to meet the young person's needs
  • Useful for improving skills and preparing for further education or employment

A-levels

Details:

  • Mainly classroom based learning
  • Similar to GCSE's but more challenging
  • Useful if interested in higher education at university or a particular type of job

  • Combines classroom learning with a placement in a workplace
  • Focuses on developing practical skills and knowledge for a specific job
  • Useful for skilled employment, higher education, or an apprenticeship

Vocational courses

Details:

  • Practical hands-on learning
  • Learning often takes place in simulated or real-world locations
  • Useful for getting knowledge, skills, and experience for a specific job

Apprenticeships

Details:
